At a brightness of 6.8, it appears as a rather large, diffuse cloud even in extremely dark, moonless and clear skies, making it difficult to see with just binoculars or a small telescope. This of course depends on the obstructions in your garden, as it is lower in the sky in April and May. This flowery cloud of cosmic dust and gas is a reflection nebula, meaning it glows due to the scattering of light from its central star. From the Northern Hemisphere (my garden is at 43° North), the best time to photograph the Iris Nebula is May-July. I used selective processing to separate the nebula from the background so that I could process them independently. In my backyard, local light pollution made it very difficult to capture the faint dust surrounding the iris. With an apparent size of 18′ x 18′, the Iris Nebula is a suitable astrophotographic target for a small refractor telescope.
One of the most important features of the Iris Nebula for me is the areas of interstellar dust that block starlight.

As a late bloomer, ‘Catch A Star’ will close the iris show with a luminous display and take the limelight as a garden star. The incredibly luminous Iris ‘Catch A Star’ is an exceptionally elegant Great Bearded Iris with richly laced pure white petals, remarkably accented by a tangerine coloured beard.
