This mystery photo is a pretty exciting one. It reveals the insides of a small crater that’s inside a larger crater called Newton. And it’s not on the Moon but on Mars. The orbiting Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft took the image, which is exciting because it shows many narrow channels running from the top of the crater down to the crater floor. (The photo covers an area stretching about 3,000 meters across.) Scientists believe that liquid water burst out here from underground Mars, eroded the gullies, and pooled at the bottom of the crater as it froze and evaporated. So water – and possibly life – might exist today below the Martian surface! Back |
