What in the world is it?

A sheep on fire? No, of course not. But here’s a hint: it has something to do with an ongoing natural hazard! . . . Give up?

Well this is a Terra satellite image of Merapi volcano in Indonesia erupting on June 6th — Just 10 days after a major earthquake struck the region and left roughly 340,000 people homeless. The volcano has been erupting since April. Merapi does not generally erupt in the traditional style — sending hot ash clouds skyward. Instead this volcano is noted for sending lava and hot gas down its slopes. So far, due to the eruptions, some 11,000 villagers, have had to be evacuated and two people have been killed.

In this false-color image, red indicates vegetation, and the brighter the red, the more robust the plant life. Clouds appear as bright, opaque white, and the volcanic plume appears as a dingy gray cloud blowing toward the southwest.
