Although NGC 2419 was found to be a gravitationally bound cluster in the outer halo of the Milky Way, it can be assumed that there are also unbound “intergalactic” globular clusters (IGCs) in the Local Group. NGC 2419 could actually have an extragalactic origin, e.g. as the remnant of a small galaxy that was captured and torn apart by the Milky Way. After the first distance measurement, Shapley suspected that NGC 2419 might not be gravitationally bound to the Milky Way or another galaxy.
